Keframa College Project in Barr, Lira district, Uganda - Nabuur village

Keframa College is a project managed by Mr. Augustine Kezzy Okello and it was initiated by Barr sub-county community members in partnership with Lango Youth Action For Development (LAYAD). The project aimed to tackle one of the many problems that affect members of this community. This area is mainly rural and families face a lot of difficulties to allow their children obtain basic education. Literacy rate is very low. Even though there is one government aided secondary school in Barr sub-county, it has not supported it with adequate infrastructure and teachers. Many families are not able to send their children to school due to the looming poverty level in this area. Our Mission is to provide education to these vulnerable children of the rural area of Barr, so they would not be deprived of education based on their geographical location or family financial circumstances. Community members wish to put up a structure which will guarantee free education for the most needy and low cost fees for poor families to create jobs and become self sufficient. Keframa College would like to attempt to bridge the gap between rich and poor by offering good quality education for the most poor. The college will benefit children from Barr sub-county and children from other neighbouring sub-counties of Aloi, Omoro, Apala, Amugu, Abako, Adekokwok and Amach. Sub-counties shall benefit from the intended scholarship scheme as the school will offer scholarships to 14 students as well who perform very well at primary leaving examinations each year.

Location

BARR sub-county lies on the eastern side of Lira district, 10 miles from Lira town. It is a sub-county with a population of about 43,000 people, greatest percentage being women and children. Their main economic activity is peasantry farming.

Profile

KEFRAMA College project is an educational initiative designed to provide Secondary school students education. Currently, the two classrooms under construction school will be unavailable after November 2010. As a result, the school is moving all primary school students to the Upper school where they will have to share space until new shelters can be provided for them. The Circle of Peace School is asking for help to start building more structures to allow their students to have better and enough classrooms and accommodation for students to concentrate more on their education. Most of their students are those whose parents have died during war, AIDS victims whose parents have died, and poor students who can't afford to pay for education. Currently there are 100 students under the mentioned category registered with the school prepared to begin lessons in February 2011. With these funds, the school will purchase all the necessary materials to begin building.

KEFRAMA College is a private school serving orphans and other children/students unable to afford the costs of attending public schools. As such, it receives no funding from public sources. Located 10 miles away from Lira Town in northern Uganda, the school is in a highly poverty stricken area and must pay for delivery of water as well as teacher salaries and facilities. School Supplies include a school uniform, other clothing (underwear and after school clothing), hygiene items (soap, toothpaste, laundry soap, haircuts, etc) medical care, transportation, and entertainment (sports equipment, musical instruments). Educational materials include text books, light for studying at night, pencils, paper, etc. Room and board includes bedding, three meals a day seven days a week, and 24/7 adult supervision.

Project History

In 2009 one year after people had resettled in their villages after long stay in internally displaced persons camps caused by insecurity as a result of the LRA insurgency, community members realized there were problems of school dropouts in the area. Children were marrying off at early age simply because they could not continue their education and many had already lost hope. After several meetings with the community, it was agreed that there needed to be a school that would specifically look at the plight of such students from poor background and yet they have the desire to study.

Who We are

KEFRAMA College is a community based secondary school, dedicated to working with children/students, their families and communities to overcome illiteracy, poverty and injustice. Inspired by Christian values, we are dedicated to working with the community's most vulnerable families and/or children/students. We serve all people regardless of religion, political affiliation or gender. Who we work with KEFRAMA College operate in Barr sub-county majorly, working with the natives of the sub-county. KEFRAMA College is dedicated to working with children/Students, their families and community leaders, regardless of religion, or gender, to overcome illiteracy, poverty and injustice

Project Impact

The alarming rate of orphans dropping out of school demands an urgent need for a new, bigger, and better secondary school equipped with modern technology. A school, in other words, with computers, a playground, and recreation center, for sporting and other indoor activities, a school bus, library, and a clinic to monitor the health status of the students.

The biggest need at the school is for more classrooms. The two classrooms at the School isn?t enough for the many students being enrolled. 100 students will lose their chance at schooling if the school closes down. Plans have been drawn up for more classroom building at the School.

Living at the school allows students to study at night and receive special attention from the teachers. There is need to put in place dormitories for both girls and boys stocked with beddings for proper accommodation. Male and female Matrons will be recruited to live next to the boys and the girls dormitories.

The School would like to have an infirmary stocked with medical supplies available to these students. The School would also like a space where ill boarding students could be cared for so that illness is not spread in the crowded dormitories. Many orphaned students will be: able to attain minimal education levels, reduce poverty levels in their homes as they engage in livelihood activities after school, reduce illiteracy rates as they gain access to free education. The project will also offer employment to teachers and non teaching staff some of whom may be members of the community where the school is located thereby building and promoting confidence among the local community.

Project Description

The rationale behind the construction of the school is in response to some of the problems being faced by children from these poor families as a result of Poverty caused by both long period of political insecurity and long draught. The school seeks to introduce a scholarship scheme for the best performing students in termly examinations and promote basic life skills, and computer lessons, in a safe and quiet environment providing the students with opportunity for employment after school. This means that children will be able to get some forms of employment once the complete ordinary level education from KEFRAMA College.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of this project shall be extremely vulnerable children/students at secondary education level as well as children from unpreviledged families whose parents cannot afford the high school fees and these shall be children from the sub-counties of Aloi, Omoro, Apala, Amugu, Abako, Adekokwok and Amach.

Project Details

KEFRAMA Coolege has received a land donated by a retired headteacher from within the community which shall contain the following structure:

Student Sponsorship scheme Q: Becoming a sponsor A: Sponsoring a student gives you a chance to share a unique relationship with the student in another part of the world. As a sponsor, your regular contributions provide important benefits to a student living in poverty and enables him/her to go to school. Although you are under no obligation, we hope that your commitment will be a long-time engagement with the student you have chosen. Many sponsors have developed a very close and friendly relationship with their sponsored child. Once you have chosen a student, you can fill in the sponsorship application form and we will get back to you as soon as possible to confirm the sponsorship and to provide you with further information about the student and the sponsorship. Within 10 days, you will receive an email that will include photos of your sponsored student, information about his/her family and other information about how your sponsored student will benefit from the sponsorship. Within a couple of months you will receive a letter from your sponsored student introducing him/herself and his/her family; Twice a year you will receive a report card showing how your sponsored student?s academic performance in school.

Q: How is my sponsored student going to benefit from my contribution? A: The objective of our sponsorship program is the education of orphans and other needy/vulnerable children. Your sponsorship fee will cover the school fees, the school materials, the school uniform, and the daily feeding program at school. There are no administration fees since the programme is entirely run on a voluntary basis. However minor fees may occur for the money transfer to Uganda. Q: How can I enter in contact with my sponsored student? A: You can send cards and letters to your sponsored student to the school address that you find on the contact page. We will arrange that your sponsored student receives the letters. Since the Ugandan postal service is sometimes not very reliable, we would advise you to contact us if you haven?t heard from us within 3 months of you sending your letter. Also, please allow between one to two months for a reply from your sponsored student.

Q: Can I send packages/gifts to my sponsored Student? A: You can send packages to your sponsored student. If you need any specific information as for example the student?s size, you always can contact us. Packages can be sent to the address provided under contact. Please make sure to write ?donation? on your package to avoid the payment of taxes and fees.

Q: Can I visit my sponsored student? A: Of course you can visit your sponsored student/family. It can be a very rewarding experience, for you and the sponsored student/family, to meet face-to-face. If you ever desire to do so, let us know and we will arrange your visit and give you general information on how you can get to our school.

Q: Can I send money directly to my sponsored student? A: If you wish to send extra money or a gift to your sponsored student or family, we would advise you to send it through us as we will make sure they receive your gift. After your sponsored student/family has received the gift, we will take a picture of the student/family with your gift so you can see yourself how happy your gift has made her/him.

Q: How can I pay my contribution for the sponsorship? A: Please contact us through our email address to get full information on how to transfer through your Bank.

Q: When will my sponsorship end? A: A sponsorship is a voluntary commitment and you can end your sponsorship with the first day of each month. A reimbursement of already paid fees is not possible. However, we see the student sponsorship as a long lasting relationship between you and your sponsored student. Continuity is crucial for a successful school career and will avoid school drop out because of the lack of funding. Your sponsorship automatically ends when the student leaves our school or does not need any longer assistance. When this happens we will offer you the opportunity to sponsor another student or family. We are confident that after you have seen how your contribution has changed the life of the student or family you have sponsored you will want to enjoy this experience again, the experience of joy for helping a needy child/student or family become strong, self-reliant and happier thanks to your generous contribution. A sponsorship ends automatically when a sponsor does not pay the fee during three months. The sponsor will be notified before.

The cost of student sponsorship can be highlighted as follows:

1. School fees per term $ 100

2. Lunch per term $ 40

3. Writing materials per term is $ 10

4. School uniform per year $ 20
